Coach Ryan Burgess is the founder of Pursuit Performance in Loveland, Colorado. A nationally recognized physical preparation coach, Ryan returned to northern Colorado in January of 2014 with one goal in mind: help the people of Colorado define, realize, and surpass their God-given gifts. Pursuit Performance is NOT just an athletic performance training business; it is Coach Burgess’ belief that we ALL have greatness within us, and it’s his unrelenting mission to help people become the best version of themselves possible. He firmly believes in the tenants of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of happiness. Pursuit Performance’s purpose is to lead people in enjoying their life, embracing their liberty, and taking responsibility to pursue their happiness.
A product of the great state of New Jersey, Coach Burgess followed in the footsteps of his family by migrating west and attending Colorado State University. At CSU Ryan earned a Bachelors of Science Degree with a concentration in Health Promotion, a specialized program that blends traditional classroom courses with multiple practicums and internships so students get an opportunity to apply what they learn. In addition to earning his degree, Coach Burgess was an offensive lineman on the CSU football team under the leadership of legendary coach Sonny Lubick. Despite garnering very little interest coming out of high school, Ryan walked-on as a freshman and enjoyed a successful collegiate career.
With a passion for training and helping others dating back to high school, Ryan immediately transitioned into the role of coach when his playing days were over. Ryan moved to San Diego, CA to take an internship at Fitness Quest 10, a personal training studio that focused on both athletic performance and general fitness. After completing an extensive 600 hour internship to complete his degree, Ryan earned his credential as a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA). From those humble beginnings as an intern to his final role as the Director of Football Development, Coach Burgess helped Fitness Quest 10 evolve from a 3,000 square foot personal training studio to a 10,000 square foot health and human performance facility regularly recognized as one of the Top 10 gyms in the United States and one of the best fitness facilities in the world
Under the leadership of gym owner Todd Durkin and Coach Burgess, Fitness Quest 10 reached an unprecedented level of impact, with athletes represented on more than half of the teams in the NFL, over 30 different college and junior college programs, and countless high school and Pop Warner teams throughout San Diego county. In 2007 Ryan took the initiative to develop and grow Fitness Quest 10’s NFL Combine Preparation Program, and in short time built a program that prepared athletes physically, mentally, and emotionally for the rigors of the Combine, their Pro Days, the Draft process, and their initiation into the world of professional athletics. By 2012 FQ10 Combine athletes were making regularly appearances in “Top Performers” categories in Indy, getting drafted, and most importantly having an impact in their first year in the league, establishing the FQ10 Combine Prep program as an emerging leader in that industry.
When not coaching others, Coach Burgess continues to push the envelope in his own quest for high performance so he can better help others do the same. In 2010 Ryan re-entered the world of competitive athletics, setting out on a journey in the world of Strength Sports. To date he has competed in 6 Strongman competitions and 3 Powerlifting meets. While he’s taking a break from competing in 2014, his goal for 2015 is to total over 1600 Raw in the 308 weight class and qualify for USPA Nationals. He’s also determined to make a return to NAS Nationals in the next 3 years and finish in the Top 20 of his weight class.
