Coach Ryan Burgess is the Director of Football Development at Fitness Quest 10 in San Diego, California. A highly respected physical preparation coach, Ryan has been a key figure in the growth of FQ10 since 2006. Currently in its 13th year of operation, Fitness Quest 10 has evolved from a 3,000 square foot personal training, massage therapy, Pilates, and yoga studio to a 10,000 square foot health and human performance facility with services now expanded to feature group training and fitness classes, physical therapy, chiropractic care, boot camps, specialized youth sport camps, and educational workshops that attract health professionals from around the world. Recently named one of the “Top 10 Training Facilities” in the country by Men’s Health, Fitness Quest 10 continues to deliver on its first class reputation.
A product of the great state of New Jersey, Coach Burgess followed in the footsteps of his family by migrating west and attending Colorado State University. At CSU Ryan earned a Bachelors of Science Degree with a concentration in Health Promotion, a specialized program that blends traditional classroom courses with multiple practicums and internships so students get an opportunity to apply what they learn. In addition to earning his degree, Coach Burgess was an offensive lineman on the CSU football team under the leadership of legendary coach Sonny Lubick. Despite garnering very little interest coming out of high school, Ryan walked-on as a freshman and enjoyed a successful collegiate career.
With a passion for training and helping others dating back to high school, Ryan immediately transitioned into the role of coach when his playing days were over. After completing an extensive 600 hour internship at Fitness Quest 10 to complete his degree, Ryan earned his credential as a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA). Under the leadership of gym owner Todd Durkin and Coach Burgess, Fitness Quest 10 now has athletes represented on more than half of the teams in the NFL, over 30 different college and junior college programs, and countless high school and Pop Warner teams throughout San Diego county. Athletes that train at Fitness Quest 10 are placed in a rigorous training protocol with an emphasis on strength, speed, movement, injury prevention, and recovery while always keeping health at the forefront. In addition, athletes are constantly challenged on their mindset, attitude, and mental strength, helping them reach personal performance levels that far exceed expectations. In 2007 Ryan took the initiative to develop and grow Fitness Quest 10’s NFL Combine Preparation Program. FQ10 now takes up to 10 athletes each year and prepares them physically, mentally, and emotionally for the rigors of the Combine, their Pro Days, the Draft process, and their initiation into the world of professional athletics. With Fitness Quest 10 athletes regularly appearing in “Top Performers” categories in Indy, getting drafted, and most importantly having an impact in their first year in the league, the FQ10 Combine Prep program is quickly emerging as a leader in that industry.
Along with leading the direction for the football program, Coach Burgess enjoys working with and training people from all walks of life. He firmly believes in the tenants of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of happiness. Ryan views it as his mission to lead people in enjoying their life, embracing their liberty, and taking responsibility to pursue their definition of happiness. When not coaching others, Coach Burgess continues to push the envelope in his own quest for high performance so he can better help others do the same. In 2010 Ryan re-entered the world of competitive athletics, setting out on a journey in the world of Strength Sports. To date he has competed in 5 Strongman competitions and 3 Powerlifting meets; his goals for 2013 are to finish in the Top 5 of a NAS Strongman Competition and total over 1600 Raw in powerlifting.
